[ [link removed] ]Voting Rights Advocates Applaud Reintroduction of the Voting Rights
Advancement Act
As our nation’s democracy braces for an election cycle that will forever
change the trajectory of our nation, People For and other voting rights
advocates applauded the Senate’s reintroduction of the John R. Lewis
Voting Rights Advancement Act (JLVRAA).
“We only have a few months to go before an election that could save our
democracy – or sink it. […] This bill […] will help restore voting
rights in this country so we can all participate in one of the most
consequential elections of our lives. We look forward to speedy passage
in the Senate.”
The reintroduction of the JLVRAA comes at a pivotal time when MAGA
Republicans are plotting behind the scenes, and openly in public, for ways
they can further undermine the right to vote and our democracy as a whole.
The bill’s passage will be crucial to ensuring their efforts can be halted
at the federal level, but we need your continued advocacy to help ensure

[ [link removed] ]The Threats to Our Democracy in 2024 are Real
Trump and his army of MAGA supporters are preparing to further undermine
our elections and democracy in 2024 (and beyond if he wins). And they’re
no longer trying to hide it.
Speaking to a crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference
(CPAC), far-right activist Jack Posobiec was quite explicit about their
goal:
"Welcome to the end of democracy. We're here to overthrow it completely.
We didn't get all the way there on January 6, but we will endeavor to
get rid of it and replace it with this right here [holds up a necklace
with a cross on it]."
The threats to our democracy in 2024 are extremely real. People For has
plans for campaigns and outreach in key electoral states this year but in

[ [link removed] ]This Black History Month, Fight for the Freedom to Learn
A little over a year ago, the College Board unveiled its long-awaited
draft AP African American Studies curriculum. What happened next was sad —
and all too predictable.
Florida officials, led by Gov. Ron DeSantis, howled. They claimed the
course “lacks educational value” and violated state laws against teaching
about race and racism. The College Board initially caved to Florida’s
demands and said the course would be heavily redacted, then said it
wouldn’t.
At the end of 2023, it released the final version of the course, and
it’s…better. But it’s still missing some important concepts. The new
course omits any discussion of “structural racism” and makes studying the
Black Lives Matter movement — modern Black history by any measure —
optional.
That pretty much sums up the state of the fight against censorship and
book-banning in this Black History Month: better, but still problematic.

A recent op-ed from People For president Svante Myrick makes the case that
in order for our nation to move forward to save our democracy, we need to
partner with those across the aisle who truly put the survival of our
republic ahead of party politics or ideology:
“Sometimes we have to let go of our worst assumptions about people. And
forgiveness, while challenging, can sometimes be the first step toward a
conversation that leads to openness for people to change. Especially
when we agree that a greater good is at stake. Maybe that means for your
family, and maybe it means for your country.
I know this view will be unpopular with some people, including a few
whom I consider to be my most like-minded political allies. But this is
the call I’m making today, to think about the greater good.”
