Dear John,
In 2000, George W. Bush lost the popular vote to Al Gore by 543,000 votes but still won the White House as a result of the irrational and undemocratic Electoral College system.
Then it happened again in 2016, when Donald Trump became the president despite losing by nearly 2.9 million votes.
Now, with the 2024 election fast approaching, we're once again at risk of seeing Trump win while losing the popular vote.
You might think it's too late to do anything about this, but that's nonsense.
In fact, there's already an effort underway to get states to commit legally to allocate their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. It's called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, and once enough states join in to add up to 270 electoral votes, the agreement goes into effect — and we’re already up to 205!
We only need 5 or 6 more states to reach the critical number of 270 electoral votes. Will you make a donation to help spread the word, get the truth out, and end the undemocratic Electoral College system?
If not for the disastrous and anti-democratic Electoral College system, President Bush would have lost in 2000 and there never would have been a President Trump at all.
That means no Iraq War, which killed an estimated 300,000 Iraqi civilians as well as over 4,400 American troops.
No Trump and Bush tax cuts, which cost the nation more than $10 trillion (and counting).
No pulling out of the Kyoto Protocol, which delayed global action on climate for several crucial years.
No far-right supermajority on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
No January 6 insurrection.
But there's still time to end this nonsense once and for all. All we need are a few more states to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, and the current Electoral College fiasco will be sent to the dustbin of history.
I'll be honest. Politically, the odds of pulling this off before the
2024 election are shrinking every day. But if they wanted to, every single state could join the
National Popular Vote Interstate Compact today. All we need is the political will.
The stakes are simply
too high to stop pushing. And if we fall short and there's another Electoral College meltdown in November, we must ensure that the American
people know who's at fault.
