REPORT: 24% of Americans Harbor Extensive Antisemitic Prejudice, Up From 20% in 2022

The number of Americans who hold extensive antisemitic beliefs increased to 24 percent, up from 20 percent in 2022, according to a survey conducted by the ADL Center for Antisemitism Research.

This survey found Millennials and Generation Z have surpassed older Americans and agree with more anti-Jewish tropes than any other generational cohorts.

ADL’s survey also found that 27.2 percent of Americans would find it at least somewhat acceptable for a close family member to support Hamas, and 23.2 percent of Americans have a close friend or family member who dislikes Jews.

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt addressed this problematic trend: “The sharp reversal, from older generations to younger generations being more likely to hold antisemitic beliefs, is a terrifying concern for our future. The need for better solutions is more urgent than ever — before this dangerous momentum keeps growing.”

NEWS: Legal Action Against Classroom Antisemitism: This week, ADL and The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education against California’s Berkeley Unified School District for failing to take action to end nonstop bullying and harassment of Jewish students by peers and teachers since Oct. 7. As ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt noted, “There is no more solemn or basic obligation than protecting our children from the moment when they walk into the doors of their schools, and to fail so monumentally that children feel forced to hide their Jewish identity for fear of reprisal is downright shocking.”

Anti-Israel Groups, Terrorists Praise ‘Martyr’ Who Set Self on Fire in DC: On February 25, Aaron Bushnell, an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force, approached the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., and set himself on fire to protest the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, saying he would “no longer be complicit in genocide.” His act of protest has garnered praise from anti-Israel groups and foreign terrorist organizations. The ADL Center on Extremism reported on the reactions to Bushnell’s protest from various anti-Israel and far-left activists and groups.

Farrakhan Responds to Israel-Hamas War with Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories: The Nation of Islam (NOI) held its annual Saviours’ Day conference and as in years past, the event featured significant antisemitism, including from longtime NOI leader Louis Farrakhan. Central to Farrakhan’s speech was his conspiratorial accusation that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu had advance knowledge of and even a hand in Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack on Israel. Farrakhan also criticized United States President Joe Biden for supposedly “bowing down” to Netanyahu’s demands. “The whole world right now is enslaved — and America is the greatest enslaved nation
— by the Synagogue of Satan,” Farrakhan stated, using the derogatory phrase often employed by antisemites to refer to Jews and Judaism.

New ADL Partnership to Help Interfaith Families Counter Antisemitism: 18Doors and ADL announced a new partnership to combine efforts to combat antisemitism and provide resources for those in interfaith relationships. “As more Jewish Americans are encountering antisemitism, there’s an increasing need for resources — including for those in interfaith families who may be having challenging conversations with family members from different backgrounds,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO.

“Winning the War and Freeing the Hostages”: ADL’s Kenneth Jacobson writes in the Times of Israel about the tensions within Israel. Excerpt:

As the war against Hamas continues, the Israeli government is insisting that the best way to free the hostages is to increase the military pressure on Hamas... Others, including families of those held hostage, argue that freeing the hostages should be the number one priority and even that Israeli military actions might endanger the remaining hostages held by Hamas. In the midst of these different perspectives, the Jewish People Policy Institute asked a binary question in one of its public opinion surveys. They gave the public two scenarios to choose from: one, the hostages are returned but Hamas remains in power; two, the hostages are not returned but Hamas is no longer in power...

This is just one recent example of the increasing antisemitic incidents we’re seeing across the U.S. These fliers in Indianapolis spread white supremacist and antisemitic rhetoric that stokes hate. ADL continues to track and monitor these hateful campaigns.

As I said on @Morning_Joe today, #antisemitism isn’t just expanding — it’s intensifying. To hear Jewish students saying they’re hiding their Jewish identity due to the fear of being targeted is unacceptable by any standard. It’s not just antisemitic, it’s anti-American to harass people based on who they are, how they pray or where they’re from.
