Denise Lewis, CHW is a Training Manager with Healthy Futures of Texas where she provides training and technical assistance on sexual health education and related topics to Health Educators, Youth Serving Adults, and Caregivers. Denise develops standardized training for Healthy Futures of Texas and community partners.

Darius Buggs, B.S is a Training Manager with Healthy Futures of Texas. Darius brings 20 years of experience and leadership, facilitating education and outreach to youth, young-adults, and youth-serving professionals.

Sexual Health: What’s The Connection?” 

A report by Gallup and the Walton Family Foundation in 2024 found that individuals between the ages of 12 and 27, who are part of Gen Z, have reported having the lowest levels of mental well-being compared to any other generation. Additionally, recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that teen birth rates in the United States have increased for the first time in 15 years. Texas, which has seen a decline in teen birth rates over the years, has experienced a rise in teenage birth rates in 2022.

To better understand the reasons behind these increases and address the problems Gen Z faces, three leading organizations in Texas are coming together to host an open discussion on LinkedIn Live.

"Strengthening School Health Policy: Empowering SHACs to Collaborate with School Boards"

It’s Time Texas will be hosting a virtual workshop Wednesday, March 20, from 2:00pm-3:30pm CST, focused on the vital collaboration between School Health Advisory Councils (SHACs) and school boards regarding school health policy.

During the workshop, representatives from the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) and the Brownsville ISD SHAC will highlight:

- Best practices for presenting SHAC-related issues to a local school board. 
- Exploring responsibilities of the school board and of school administration around school health policy. 
- Diverse perspectives on the implementation of policies and working with the school board.

HFTX 2024 Youth Advocacy Day at the Texas Capitol

In February, our Youth Advocates attended the Healthy Futures of Texas 2024 Youth Advocacy Day at the Texas Capitol. Young people from San Antonio, Dallas, and Brownsville traveled to Austin for a full day of legislative engagement, where they researched critical sexual health issues, crafted issue papers, practiced advocacy message delivery, and incorporated storytelling from their lived experience.

Congratulations to the impressive work of these young leaders!
