Three decades ago, the founders of Brady achieved their goal that took seven years, six votes, and three presidents: The Brady Background Check System went into effect. Our nation's first and only background check system for gun sales.
In 30 years, the Brady Background Check System has blocked nearly 4.9 prohibited firearms purchases and states that require background checks on all handgun sales have less than half as many mass shootings as those that don't.
But 30 years ago, the internet did not exist and gun shows hadn't become the big businesses they are today, and these decades of changes to our society have left deadly gaps in our laws that allow otherwise prohibited purchasers to circumvent a background check in acquiring firearms.
That's why we need to expand and strengthen the Brady Background Check System – and the majority of Americans agree.
