A Promising Cost-Effective Approach in Mexico to Reduce Deforestation

Tropical forests are vital carbon sinks to reduce climate change impacts, but protecting them is challenging, especially with limited budgets. To encourage forest protection in southern Mexico, researchers compared the impact of paying forest-owning households to fully enroll their forested land for conservation with the current program that allows households to choose to only partially enroll their forest. Deforestation dropped by 39 percent in full enrollment compared to partial enrollment, making it 4.6 times more cost-effective and a promising approach for global forest conservation efforts.

While interviewing primary school teachers in Kenya about how students were faring post-pandemic, IPA researchers encountered a surprising development. They had anticipated some of the gender-related concerns in education. School closures left more girls vulnerable to health and safety risks. What was unexpected, however, was the frequency with which teachers reported that boys were underperforming academically.

In this blog, Sarah Kabay (IPA's Education Program Director) reflects on her research and the role of evidence in addressing the complex gender dynamics of education in Kenya and beyond. To that end, she and Victoria Kiasyo Isika (IPA's Associate Director of Policy) collaborated on a working paper and co-hosted a dissemination webinar on February 14.
