IPA Looking Ahead in 2024: A Letter from the Executive Director

By Annie Duflo

Last year marked my 15th year at IPA. As I reflect on this milestone I am incredibly proud of all we have achieved in the last 20+ years of creating evidence, strategically sharing evidence, and enabling others to use evidence in the fight against global poverty. Looking ahead, I am also tremendously excited about our next chapter, which will focus on our drive to accelerate the translation of existing evidence into real impact that improves lives (we will of course continue to produce rigorous evidence as well).

Nigeria Evidence Summit

IPA Nigeria recently hosted the Evidence Summit in Abuja, convening stakeholders and policymakers to share and discuss evidence-based policies and programs in social protection, education, and financial inclusion.

"Data serves as the cornerstone upon which effective policies and programs are built, enabling us to identify vulnerabilities, assess needs, and tailor interventions that yield meaningful impact," said Josiah Emerole, Director of Research and Program Development at the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.

A Promising Cost-Effective Approach in Mexico to Reduce Deforestation

Researchers: Santiago Izquierdo Tort, Seema Jayachandran, and Santiago Saavedra

Tropical forests are vital carbon sinks to reduce climate change impacts, but protecting them is challenging, especially with limited budgets. To encourage forest protection in southern Mexico, researchers compared the impact of paying forest-owning households to fully enroll their forested land for conservation with the current program that allows households to choose to only partially enroll their forest. Deforestation dropped by 39 percent in full enrollment compared to partial enrollment, making it 4.6 times more cost-effective and a promising approach for global forest conservation efforts.

Could Boys be Lagging Behind?

By Sarah Kabay

While interviewing primary school teachers in Kenya about how students were faring post-pandemic, IPA researchers encountered a surprising development. They had anticipated some of the gender-related concerns in education. School closures left more girls vulnerable to health and safety risks. What was unexpected, however, was the frequency with which teachers reported that boys were underperforming academically.

In this blog, Sarah Kabay (IPA's Education Program Director) reflects on her research and the role of evidence in addressing the complex gender dynamics of education in Kenya and beyond. To that end, she and Victoria Kiasyo Isika (IPA's Associate Director of Policy) collaborated on a working paper and co-hosted a dissemination webinar on February 14.
