Energy Insecurity Indicators Associated With Increased Odds of Medical Conditions

In the February Housing & Health issue of Health Affairs, Eva Laura Siegel of Columbia University and her team of coauthors examine indicators of energy insecurity in New York City ([link removed] ) .

After surveying a sample of city residents, they find that the citywide prevalence of three or more indicators of energy insecurity was 28 percent.

This prevalence was significantly higher among Black non-Latino/a and Latino/a residents compared with White non-Latino/a residents.

Lower income households and households with children, foreign-born residents, and those with lower educational attainment were more likely to experience three or more energy insecurity indicators.

Siegel and coauthors also determine that compared with those residents with zero indicators, residents with indicators of energy insecurity had increased odds of mental health conditions, respiratory conditions, cardiovascular disease, and use of electric medical devices.

To learn more about their findings, check out a video abstract ([link removed] ) featuring lead author Eva Laura Siegel.
