President's Message

NASN's vision is that all students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. All students must have equal opportunity and support to attain their full potential.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities' campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as understanding the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

The Center for Transition to Adult Health Care for Youth with Disabilities' accessible website, www.MovingToAdultHealthCare.org, helps young people and their families take the lead in health care transition. Created by and for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it features tools and resources for youth, their families, and health care professionals supporting these families through health care transition.

NASN News and Highlights

School-Located Vaccination (SLV)

Healthy People 2030 focuses on preventing infectious diseases by increasing vaccination rates. SLV is a strategy to increase immunization rates, reduce vaccine preventable disease, and increase equitable access to vaccines. NASN and the Association of Immunization Managers (AIM) collaborated to create the School-Located Vaccination Clinics Toolkit with reports and resources for schools and immunization partners to support and simplify SLV operations. The toolkit was featured this week in AIM's Weekly Partner Update, along with many other resources relevant to public, school, and student health.

Formalized Mentoring and Networking Opportunities for School Nurses

Often, nurses new to the school setting have more questions than answers about school nursing practice, with little opportunity to connect with other school nurses for answers. The NASN School Nurse article Establishing a School Nurse Mentoring Network outlines how one Regional Office of Education (ROE) in central Illinois partnered with a Certified School Nurse to establish a mentoring and networking program to foster relationships and information sharing among school nurses.

NASN members can receive instant feedback and support from thousands of school nurse peers in NASN’s trusted and professional online space, the All Member Forum.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Evidence-Based Asthma Management Promoting Equitable Student-Centered Care

A PCORI-funded study of African-American children and teens with mild persistent asthma found that symptom-based intermittent inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) adjustment provided a child-centered approach that did not differ significantly in outcomes when compared to a prescribed daily ICS plan of care. Knowledge of this evidence-based option for asthma management can be used to promote equitable student-centered care.

NASN's PCORI Symptom-based Adjustment of Inhaled Steroid Therapy Study (The ASIST Study) for Mild Asthma: School Nurse Implementation Guidance includes tools tailored for the school nurse, parents/guardians, and Healthcare Providers and can aid the school nurse in engaging with all members of the student's care team and guide the team in collaboratively implementing these new strategies and interventions when appropriate for the student. View Evidence Implementation Guidance.
