Here Are Our Updates!

February 2024
Outright International Monthly Newsletter

Explore our February newsletter, an opportunity to understand our ongoing work in advocating for LGBTIQ rights across the globe. We comment on the dangerous development in Ghana that threatens not just LGBTIQ people but human rights for everyone in the country, give you highlights about our global programs that have been evolving over the last year, new voices through our Outright Podcast, and a reminder to follow our channels during March for full coverage of Outright's participation at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68). Read the full newsletter and get involved in our work. Share it with your community who might be interested in joining the fight for human rights for LGBTIQ people across the globe.

Ghana’s President Should Reject the New Law
On February 28, Ghana's parliament passed a law that aims to criminalize the very existence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and allies! The bill, which is called "Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values," will have severe and detrimental effects on the lives and freedoms of LGBTQ individuals and allies in Ghana and Outright calls on Ghana's president to reject the bill and instead work towards upholding the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Explore Our Global Programs
Outright has a series of global programs that support innovative advocacy and use our collective might to carry the voices of activists to advance equality and help end discrimination. These programs include LBQ Connect, our program in Africa fighting Conversion Practices, the Global Trans Program, the Inclusive Development Program, and the Global LGBTQI+ Inclusive Democracy and Empowerment (GLIDE) Initiative.

Will the UN Continue to Leave LGBTIQ Afghans Behind?
Outright's Neela Ghoshal and the Executive Director of Afghanistan LGBT, Artemis Akbary, reflected on the UN high-level meeting on Afghanistan that took place in Doha, Qatar on February 18-19 in this commentary. You can also review Outright's report documenting abuses against LGBTIQ Afghans from the 2023 "A Mountain on My Shoulders: 18 Months of Taliban Persecution of LGBTIQ Afghans."

Outright at CSW68: March 11 to 22, 2024

The annual United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the largest annual gathering dedicated to the promotion of gender equality, and Outright participates every year. This year, CSW is the 68th session and will take place from March 11 to 22, 2024, at the UN Headquarters in New York under the priority theme Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.
Outright collaborates with many other organizations to ensure the visibility of LBQ and trans people, host parallel events on the priority theme, and promote inclusion of LGBTIQ issues. We also plan for meetings with UN agencies, member state delegations, and many other stakeholders throughout the CSW. Learn more here
