Welcome to the GLSEN Bulletin!
With all the work going on behind the scenes at GLSEN, we wanted to keep you in the loop about our initiatives to make schools safe, affirming, and liberatory for K-12 students across the nation. Every two months, you’ll receive news, actions to take, and resources to utilize. – GLSEN Executive Director, Melanie Willingham-Jaggers
GLSEN FOUR SUPPORTS:
At GLSEN, we work in a variety of sectors in order to create school climates where youth feel connected and empowered.
Comprehensive Policies: GLSEN works at a national and state level to protect LGBTQ+ youth in the K-12 School System.
Supportive Educators: GLSEN provides resources to over 20,000 educators nationwide.
Student-led clubs: GLSEN supports more than 12,000 GSAs across the country to create spaces for LGBTQ+ youth to be themselves.
Inclusive Curriculum: GLSEN advocates for research-backed inclusive LGBTQ+ representation in the classroom, with 800,000+ GLSEN resources downloaded by educators and students each year.
NEWS:
Trans youth matter. They need us to show up for them now.
“We are in a catalyzing moment, and my deepest hope … is that our people are coming out the other side of this feeling more connected to their power, more connected to each other.”

NEX BENEDICT:
On February 8th, 16 year-old nonbinary Oklahoma resident, Nex Benedict, died a day after being attacked and assaulted in their school bathroom.
Nex was connected to the Choctaw Tribe.
Nex enjoyed drawing, reading and playing video games.
Nex loved their cat Zeus.
Nex should be alive.

RAINBOW LIBRARY:
Our Rainbow Library program is expanding! School staff in Illinois and Louisiana can now request a full set of LGBTQ+-inclusive books for their school. That makes 33 states eligible to receive books! If you work in a school, join the over 6,700 other schools that participate in our program by requesting a set at rainbowlibrary.org
GLSEN IN-PERSON!:
Join GLSEN for two major events on the East Coast! Rise Up D.C. takes place on Thursday, March 14th and the 2024 Respect Awards NYC takes place on Monday, April 29th. Proceeds from these special evenings fuel our work fighting to create a safer school environment for all students. Learn more at RiseUpDC.glsen.org and Respect.glsen.org.
TITLE IX
For the first time in Title IX's more than 50 years of history, updated regulations are expected to clarify that Title IX's requirement barring sex discrimination in schools also explicitly protects against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics. The proposed Title IX rules will also clarify that schools should not exclude students from sex-separated spaces, such as bathrooms and locker rooms, that are consistent with their gender identity.
Speak out today to let your representatives know the importance of these Title IX changes and the need for safer schools for LGBTQI+ youth! Sign the Action Alert: [link removed]
