Happy Leap Day!

We know we’ve been emailing you about our February fundraising goal, but before we get to our update, we couldn’t resist taking a minute to talk about Leap Day.

As you know, our years are 365 days, which is about how long it takes for our planet to orbit around the sun – but the actual time it takes us to circle the sun is about 365.25 days. To account for that extra time, in 45 B.C., Julius Caesar’s calendar occasionally added a bonus month between February and March (he called it “Mensis Intercalaris”). The Romans used this calendar until 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII swapped that occasional extra month for a single extra day every four years – and created February 29, our Leap Day.

You’ve probably heard of Leap Day traditions, like women proposing to men on this day, or using this day to do everything you’ve been putting off since the new year started.

We’re asking you to spend a few minutes on this Leap Day protecting our democracy.

The way the Gregorian calendar works out, every presidential election year is a leap year.

There are two ways to look at that. On the one hand, it’s not just that every presidential election year feels longer – it actually is longer.

But on the other hand, we get an extra day to do the work required to protect our democracy: volunteering for a campaign, talking to our friends and family about the stakes of the election, or donating to candidates and causes that will build a future for all of us that is more equitable, inclusive, and fair.
