Have you ever wondered what you would do with an extra day? Well, let’s pick today and see how much collective good we can accomplish for children. After all, it is Leap Day.
I’ll start us off. Because UNICEF plays a key role in vaccinating children, I’m leaping in to strengthen this work by purchasing 200 polio vaccines from UNICEF USA’s Inspired Gifts catalog. Thanks to a monumental effort begun and led by Rotary International, there were only 12 new cases caused by the wild polio virus in the entire world last year. Just 12.
Eradication is so close, but we can’t stop until it’s done —

This Leap Day got me thinking: how much good can we get done in one day? Quite a bit, it turns out. Here’s an example from our work at UNICEF:
Each year, UNICEF delivers more than 2 billion lifesaving vaccines to help protect children against diseases such as measles, pneumonia and polio. That’s 5,479,452 vaccine doses per day.
Getting good things done in a day is especially important to combat all of the bad things that can happen to children in a single day. For instance:
- 1,000 children under age 5 die every day across the world as a result of unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene.
- 20,000 children are displaced every day by climate-related disasters like floods, droughts and fires
- 356 million children are living in extreme poverty every day, forced to survive on less than $1.90 a day

Children rely on UNICEF every single day — special and ordinary moments alike — for hope and relief. With your support, you help make so much good possible —

and today you have an extra chance to make a difference so let’s take it!
Thanks for leaping in,
