Friend – On March 5, the D.C. Council will take its final vote on the Secure DC Act, and Councilmembers need to hear from you today – either again or for the first time. Tell Councilmembers to say NO to abuse of power in D.C. We deserve to be safe from crime and from abuse of power. But even with our progress, the Secure DC Act still contains provisions that put both our safety and our rights at risk. Between when the bill was announced and the first vote on February 6, we and our partners advocated for important amendments that preserved police accountability measures, removed invasive DNA collection language, mandated data-driven decisions on pretrial detention, and more. But some of these gains are at risk and there is more work to be done.
Among other measures, the Secure DC Act would give inappropriate powers to police and enable police harassment. The D.C. Council may even consider collecting the DNA of people who have never been convicted of a crime. Allowing officers to escape accountability, to harass people, and to collect DNA on arrest will not make D.C. safer. These types of provisions are not "public safety" solutions; they are measures that open the door for abuse of power. Tell Councilmembers to say NO to abuse of power in D.C.
