| | | Dear John, As we transition from Black History Month into Women’s History Month, I’m thinking of the leaders who stand at the intersection of these identities. Black women have been on the front lines of nearly every impactful grassroots movement throughout history — from the abolition of slavery, the suffragette movement, civil rights movements, criminal justice reform, and climate justice to fighting for fair wages for domestic workers, and the end of racial profiling. And yet, while standing at the forefront of these movements, Black women have historically been – and continue to be – underfunded and under-resourced. Their connection to these movements is often deeply personal, positioning Black women leaders to be more likely to burn out in the process of doing work that’s essential to move us all forward. At the Ms. Foundation, we’re proud to invest in and build the capacity of many organizations led by Black women. This month, we recognized Black Girl Freedom Week, which is an annual celebration of Black girls and gender-expansive youth, and what is possible when we invest abundantly in their dreams and their power. As we write the future of Black women grassroots leadership in the United States, let this time be a reminder for all of us that Black women deserve more. More funding, more support, more care, more trust. In solidarity, Ruth McFarlane Chief Advancement Officer |

| Ms. Foundation in the News A recent Chronicle of Philanthropy opinion piece shared guidance on how to fund Black-led organizations so they can thrive in the long-term. One tip is to “fund with care,” refencing findings from our latest report in the Pocket Change research series, Living with Pocket Change. “The Ms. Foundation has called on philanthropy to adopt a giving approach that focuses more on the care of nonprofit leaders. That requires reframing how grant makers think about resources to include the women and nonbinary leaders of color themselves and the underfunded multi-issue work that their organizations engage in,” wrote author Cora Daniels.
