Dear Supporter,
Even during these uncertain times, completing the 2020 Census and making sure every child is counted is imperative. Unfortunately, many groups are historically undercounted, particularly people of color and young children. Estimates from the 2010 Census put the undercount at or above 1 million children under age 5. Just in Illinois, an estimated 36,000 young children were not counted, resulting in lost funding of $340 million for the state.
The U.S. Census, which takes place every 10 years, counts every person living in the country and provides critical data that lawmakers, policy makers and others use to make important decisions about services and supports for you and your community. The federal government uses census data to inform the allocation of billions of dollars each year for schools, health care, child care assistance, nutrition programs, Head Start and other essential services.
The Ounce encourages its partners to help ensure that families have all the most accurate information so they can feel confident and safe when completing the survey.
