Dr. Fauci and COVID-19 Priorities: Therapeutics Now or Vaccines Later?

By Lyn Redwood, RN, MSN, President; Mary Holland, CHD General Counsel and Vice Chair; and the CHD Team

There is a raging debate in our government. How should America respond to the Coronavirus crisis? With therapeutic drugs? Or with a vaccine? Dr. Anthony Fauci is predictably shining a spotlight on risky and uncertain coronavirus vaccines that may not be available for two years, rather than prioritizing the short-term therapies that patients need right now.

In light of the immunity from liability guaranteed by the PREP Act during declared emergencies, fast-tracked vaccines are a sweetheart deal for both biopharma and government. Will Big Pharma and biotech companies be allowed to cash in on this catastrophe with speculative, patentable vaccines at the expense of the therapeutics needed to save lives now?

Event 201: Yesterday’s Pandemic Simulation Mirrors Today’s Reality

By Mary Holland, CHD General Counsel and Vice Chair

We are living in unfamiliar times. Our world has changed rapidly and dramatically since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. While the coronavirus pandemic has caught most of us by surprise, some in business and government circles have been preparing for just such a pandemic for a long time.

Held just two months before the coronavirus outbreak, “Event 201: A Pandemic Simulation” brought together a Who’s Who of corporate and government participants to discuss fictional pandemic solutions such as: countermeasures, trade and travel, finance, communications, and more. Coincidentally, the participants addressed a simulated global pandemic from a coronavirus that initially showed up in bats, then pigs, and finally jumped to humans before spreading rapidly around the world despite the "players’" best efforts.

What California Data Tell Us About Autism Prevalence—and Prevention

By the Children's Health Defense Team

Many autism researchers consider the high-quality, state-level data collected by the California Department of Developmental Services to be the most reliable long-term record of autism prevalence trends in the United States. A new study using that database has “unmasked” patterns showing that autism rates are evolving in strikingly different ways for different groups.

Specifically, the county-level analysis shows that racial/ethnic minorities and lower-income families are increasingly bearing the brunt of severe autism, while conversely, ASD prevalence is flattening and even declining among whites in California’s wealthier counties. These results show there is an urgent need to understand all the factors of what is happening within these groups and what can be done to help all children.

Will “Deaths of Despair” Outpace Deaths From Coronavirus?

By Toby Rogers, Ph.D., Guest Contributor

Even though it is the model used by the US Government as the basis for the 100-page “U.S. Government COVID-19 Response Plan” the Imperial College London pandemic model is woefully inadequate. It does not model increased use of personal protective equipment in the general public such as face masks. It does not model medical interventions that have shown promise in reducing fatalities. And it does not take into account “deaths of despair” from a sharp rise in unemployment that will be triggered by sheltering in place for weeks, months, or even years.
