Boiling tap water can remove 80 per cent of the microplastics in it - New Scientist (No paywall) Eddy Zeng at Jinan University in China and his colleagues took samples of tap water and measured their levels of NMPs, finding an average concentration of 1 milligram per litre. They then boiled the samples for 5 minutes, before allowing them to cool. The levels of NMPs were then remeasured and found to have reduced by more than 80 per cent.
“We estimated that intakes of NMPs through boiled water consumption were two to five times less than those through tap water on a daily basis,” says Zeng. “This simple but effective boiling-water strategy can ‘decontaminate’ NMPs from household tap water and has the potential for harmlessly alleviating human exposure to NMPs through water consumption.”

WorkGoogle Prepares for a Future Where Search Isn't King - WIRED (No paywall) Google's CEO Sundar Pichai still loves the web. He wakes up every morning and reads Techmeme, a news aggregator resplendent with links, accessible only via the web. The web is dynamic and resilient, he says, and can stillâwith help from a search engineâprovide whatever information a person is looking for. WorkThe Supreme Court Just Gave Trump Exactly What He Wanted The Supreme Court has all but guaranteed that Donald Trump will not face trial for his efforts to subvert the 2020 election before this November’s presidential election. On Wednesday, after more than two weeks’ delay, the court issued an order refusing to lift the stay that’s preventing the Jan. 6 trial, prosecuted by Special Counsel Jack Smith, from moving forward. Instead, the court took up the case, scheduling oral arguments for the week of April 22—nearly two months from now. On this timeline, the justices will probably issue a decision near the end of June. That punt gives Trump exactly what he wanted: an extended pause that will make it impossible for Judge Tanya Chutkan to hold a trial in time for the upcoming election.

WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkAn AI license plate surveillance startup installed hundreds of cameras without permission In June of 2022, an Illinois DOT official in contact with Flock representatives told the company it had many repeated, error-filled permit applications for camera installations. A Flock representative gave the IDOT official a thinly-veiled threat that if they didn’t fast-track the process, Flock would send “about 30 different police chiefs” to their office to talk to them about it. WorkDonna Summer’s Estate Sues Ye for Sampling ‘I Feel Love’ “Vultures 1” has been the top album on the Billboard 200 chart for two consecutive weeks, Ye’s first album to achieve that distinction since “Watch the Throne,” a collaboration with Jay-Z, in 2011. It was released independently and earned about $1 million in its first week in the United States through sales and streams. So it might not be too surprising to hear that many Vision Pro users have complained about eye strain. (After all, the headset does use two 4K screens, one in front of each eyeball.) However, these are common complaints from overall VR usage and experts say it isn’t something to freak out over. WorkFrance to make abortion a constitutional right after senate vote In 2022, the French parliament voted to extend France’s legal limit for ending a pregnancy from 12 to 14 weeks, amid anger that thousands of women were forced to travel abroad each year to terminate pregnancies in countries including the Netherlands, Spain or England. WorkU.S. Airman’s Winding Path Ended in Self-Immolation to Protest Israel His was the second such protest in the United States in recent months. In December, a woman with a Palestinian flag lit herself on fire outside of the Israeli consulate building in Atlanta; she was not identified, and she has remained hospitalized, currently listed in stable condition. On Wednesday, Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, asked the Defense Department whether Mr. Bushnell had ever shown any “extremist leanings” in the past. WorkJeffries Suggests Democrats Would Save Johnson From Removal Over Ukraine Aid “It does seem to me,” Mr. Jeffries said, “based on informal conversations, that were Speaker Johnson to do the right thing relative to meeting the significant national security needs of the American people by putting it on the floor for an up-or-down vote, there will be a reasonable number of people in the House Democratic Caucus who will take the position that he should not fall as a result.” WorkSalesforce CEO Marc Benioff is buying huge amounts of land in Hawaii While it’s tempting to envision what kind of Fyre-fest-on-steroids DROAM might be, I present an alternate plan of action: Have the federal government tax the wealthiest Americans at 90 percent and use the proceeds to subsidize affordable housing. I think that’d be a whole lot more effective than waiting for the world’s richest idiots to figure out how urban planning works. WorkBMW builds the best cars in America, Consumer Reports says That said, it doesn’t appear that CR judged styling as part of this particular comparison, and if it had, we suspect BMW would have fared worse. Still, with the top overall score, the top road test score and both above-average reliability and owner satisfaction, BMW does make a solid case for itself. WorkFamily lose £165 Ryanair check-in dispute Rory Boland, Editor of Which? WorkWorkHow the Media Industry Keeps Losing the Future The slow crash of newspapers and magazines would be of limited interest save for one thing: Traditional media had at its core the exalted and difficult mission of communicating information about the world. From investigative reports on government to coverage of local politicians, the news served to make all the institutions and individuals covered a bit more transparent and, possibly, more honest. WorkStreaming Prices Keep Going Up. Here’s How to Manage Subscriptions. Streaming services still offer more flexibility and potential to save than a cable bundle. If that’s what drew you to streaming, the solution may seem obvious: You could be more judicious about managing your subscriptions — by canceling Netflix as soon as you’re done bingeing “Love Is Blind,” for instance.
