That makes Arena Academy more timely than ever. Our first virtual Academy, which kicked off earlier today, responds to that need with a revamped curriculum that gives grads the tools to campaign effectively as long as social distancing lasts.
This is the first in a series of Academies that respond to the crisis in state leadership. Florida, where we'll work to place grads from our next virtual Academy, is a tempest in a teapot for the ways GOP domination of state government has contributed to the system failure that has made Coronavirus so brutal.
But we’re not defenseless -- if we flip the Florida State House, we can win real reforms with rippling consequences. For example:
- Expanding Medicaid helps more Floridians access the health coverage they need to recover from COVID-19 and survive the oncoming economic depression
- Restoring rights to returning citizens gives a voice to one of the populations that is, unfortunately, likely to be hardest hit by Coronavirus and allows formerly incarcerated people to advocate for their own interests
- Expanding voting rights means we can elect leaders in Congress and the Presidency who will actually fight for a social safety net. A more representative vote in Florida will reverberate throughout the country
