Friends,
The freedom to start or grow a family is one of the most precious, private, and important liberties of one’s life.
In the past couple weeks, we’ve seen a disturbing attack on that fundamental freedom, as the Alabama Supreme Court handed down a decision that imperils access to IVF – critical medical care that millions of families have used for decades. Overnight, families watched as their greatest hopes, months of planning and doctor’s appointments, and thousands of their hard-earned dollars were suddenly jeopardized by far-right justices. It’s a heartbreaking, unthinkable tragedy.
Let me be clear: this isn’t an anomaly, a freak occurrence, or something that could only happen in Alabama. Since the fall of Roe, Republicans have worked to undermine access to all sorts of reproductive care, including birth control and IVF.
That’s why I’m pushing for us to codify access to IVF (and simultaneously pushing to restore Roe v. Wade and protect birth control, too). I’m a proud sponsor of the Access to Family Building Act, legislation that would establish a federal right to assisted reproductive technology. Today, my Democratic colleagues attempted to pass it… but Republicans objected, despite the overwhelming popularity of protections for IVF.
Still, the fight isn’t over and I won’t be standing down. I’m going to keep pushing to pass this critical legislation. I will keep standing up for folks to have the freedom to have a family and access all types of reproductive care, too. If you’re interested in getting in touch with me about access to IVF or another issue, I encourage you to reach out to me using the form on my Senate website. You can also follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Threads. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
