Dear Friend --
Today the USNS Mercy, the 1000 bed Navy Hospital Ship pictured
below, docks in our neighboring Port of Los Angeles. The ship will be
a lifeline for local hospitals, including here in Long Beach, freeing
up space by serving patients who do not have COVID-19.
The ship left San Diego Monday with more than 800 Navy medical
personnel and support staff and more than 70 civil service mariners
and we want to welcome them and thank them for being here.
Among them is Commander Edgar San Luis of Long Beach. A special
welcome home to Commander San Luis!
The arrival of the Mercy is a great sign of hope, and will help our
efforts in this crisis tremendously. Thank you to our federal, state,
and local LA partners for making this happen. I especially want to
thank LA County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger, our own
Supervisor Janice Hahn, and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti for their amazing
work.
