Save The Waves partners with local communities and movements to mitigate and defeat immediate threats or to preemptively protect surf ecosystems before they can be destroyed or altered. Here’s the latest news and updates from endangered wave campaigns we are supporting around the world.

Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Great news on the ongoing effort to protect Puerto Escondido and Playa Colorada. After years of effort by Salvemos Colorada, a prohibition on permits for development in this ecologically sensitive zone has been issued.This is a critical step in the long-term and final objective of designating a legally protected area in the zone.

This huge milestone is part of the ongoing campaign #salvemospuertoscondido, a collaborative campaign between Save The Waves, Salvemos Colorada, Costa Unida, and other local groups to address a myriad of threats faced in the wave-rich zone.

Punta Conejo, Salina Cruz, Mexico

Save The Waves staff recently held workshops with community members in the Punta Conejo area to discuss legally protecting Conejo’s endangered surf ecosystem, which includes mangrove wetlands. As part of the workshops, our team got input from community members to prioritize ecological conservation areas and record the flora and fauna found in their communities.

Save The Waves also met with Oaxacan government officials and discussed managing and protecting surf spots and their surrounding ecosystems across the state. With these workshops complete, our team can now focus on the next stages of planning a protected area in Punta Conejo.

Katoku Beach, Amami, Japan

The fight to protect the wave and coastal dune environment of Katoku Beach in Amami, Japan continues.  While the local team on the ground is working with their legal representation to formally reject the proposed 6.5 meters 180-foot-long seawall that would destroy the native dune habitat and exacerbate beach erosion, there are also some positive indications that the local government is setting up a forum to consider alternative solutions to the project.  Time will tell, but wave-savers around the world can help Katoku by signing the petition below demanding that the last natural surfing beach in Amami be left alone.
