Many of our nonprofit and shareholder allies have been watching the far-right attacks on As You Sow, shareholder engagement, and corporate climate action with great concern. Our friends at Green America have taken their concern a step farther, with an online letter-writing campaign telling Congress to stop trying to block corporate progress on climate and stand with As You Sow.

Last month, As You Sow’s President and Chief Counsel, Danielle Fugere (named one of TIME’s 100 most influential climate leaders driving business climate action) had to testify for the House Judiciary Committee in DC, for nearly eight hours. The Committee and the rabid far right behind it are just not giving up — As You Sow’s CEO, Andrew Behar, will be similarly testifying a month from today, on March 28.

The letter to Congress will also act as a petition that Andy will present in person in March. The online action generated over 10,000 letters on its first day – it now has reached well over 16,000. The more letters and signatures, the stronger the message to Congress that the Judiciary Committee does NOT speak for all Americans when it claims that asking a company to reduce carbon pollution infringes on the freedom of all Americans.

And it matters. While the House Judiciary Committee is flinging antitrust allegations and protecting the fossil fuel industry, climate-induced superstorms and wildfires are wiping out homes and making insurance unaffordable. Extreme heat, floods, and droughts are reducing harvests of wheat, sugar, coffee, cacao, and cotton, leading to increased prices for all Americans.

It’s just wrong.

It’s also a testament to how effective our work with corporations really is.
