We must end plastic pollution

Hi John,

In 2022, I joined a quarter of a million people around the UK and counted my plastic waste for a week. I knew this would help The Big Plastic Count uncover the truth about the plastics crisis, but I hadn’t expected to enjoy taking part so much!

Thinking about why, I realised it’s because our collective effort meant something. Together, we exposed what really happens to our plastic, and that just 12% is actually recycled. We took the data to the UK Government, and pushed them to set ambitious targets to reduce plastic production. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Being part of the solution makes you feel better about the problem.

That’s why I jumped at the chance to get stuck in again this year - will you join me, John?

A long time ago now, I was lucky enough to go to Antarctica. I couldn’t wait to get off the ship with my camera, ready to capture one of the last untouched ecosystems on earth. But it didn’t turn out like that.

I took ten steps onto the beach and there it was. A plastic bottle. I was devastated. Even here, at the ends of the earth, there was no escaping plastic. So imagine my dismay when I found out that, if we don’t act now, the problem will only get worse.

That’s why I feel more motivated than ever to do something about it, and why I’m emailing you today. Will you join me in taking part in The Big Plastic Count? It’s a super simple way to make a world of difference. All you have to do is:

- Now - Sign up: [link removed]
- 11-17 March 2024 - count your plastic
- 17 - 31 March - submit your results

After you’ve counted your plastic, the team at The Big Plastic Count will take your findings to the UN Global Plastics Treaty – a once-in-a-generation chance to get the plastics crisis under control. With you on our side, we’ll show world-leaders the scale of the problem and push for ambitious new laws to limit plastic.

That sounds easier said than done, right? But we won a similar Treaty last year, so I know that with your help, we can do it again. And when we do, the UK government, brands and supermarkets will have no choice but to change course.

So what do you say? Is this the year we make our voices heard on plastic waste? If everyone who wants to make a difference, all over the UK, pitches in, we can.
