Hey John,
Urgent action taking place at SXSW (starting March 8) and we need your support.
Nearly 1 in 5 patients now travels out of state for abortion access.1 This is the reality of post-Roe state abortion bans. Recently, some communities and states have also passed abortion travel bans.
That means people seeking reproductive healthcare are even more susceptible to additional and exceptional abortion surveillance. Without strong privacy protections, law enforcement can easily use our data to track and prosecute people seeking abortions and reproductive healthcare.2 And it’s not only abortion-seekers who could be targeted: the dragnet effect of these laws could be massive. In an effort to enforce bans, everyone’s search history, location data, and personal conversations could be open to surveillance.
Here’s how you can help: We’re crowdfunding a billboard to raise attention about abortion surveillance. The mobile billboard will drive around Austin, Texas for four days during SXSW, the major arts and technology festival, to raise awareness about how companies like Google are complicit in the criminalization of those seeking reproductive care.3
Will you chip in today to ensure we can buy the ad space by March 1?
What you need to know:
-
The billboard costs $5,400 ($1,350 per day for four days) — we're partway there already, so your donation could really help us reach our goal!
-
The billboards will call out Big Tech for fueling abortion criminalization through their invasive data collection practices
-
Texas is leading the way on banning abortion-related travel and SXSW is a leading destination for who's-who in tech, arts, and even politics, so this action drives the most impact possible with the biggest names in tech and in a critically important state
-
In addition to the billboard, we’ll be on a SXSW panel and organizing a local event for abortion funds/organizers

Why this matters:
As states and communities move to pass abortion travel bans, we know these laws will be prosecuted using surveillance technology, like location data, text messages, search histories, automated license plate readers (ALPRs), and more. We need to push companies to do everything they can to ensure that they are not complicit in the surveillance of people's travel, including reducing their collection, retention, and sharing of our personal and sensitive data.
