A NEW REPORT [5] PREPARED BY RUETZ CONSULTING FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA,
FUNDED BY THE ARRELL FAMILY FOUNDATION, HIGHLIGHTS THE MULTIPLE POSITIVE
RETURNS ON INVESTMENT IN SCHOOL FOOD PROGRAMS.

A COUPLE OF HIGHLIGHTS: PARENTAL ACCESS TO UNIVERSAL FREE LUNCH INCREASED
MOTHERS’ LABOR MARKET PARTICIPATION BY 5% AND PERMANENT HOUSEHOLD INCOMES
BY 2.6% IN SWEDEN (LUNDBORG ET AL., 2022). IN CHINA, THE INTRODUCTION OF
SCHOOL LUNCHES LED TO A 9%-14% INCREASE IN MOTHERS’ WORKING HOURS PER
WEEK, WITH THE MOST SIGNIFICANT INCREASES AMONG LOW-INCOME MOTHERS AND
MOTHERS IN RURAL COMMUNITIES (LIU, 2023).

It’s time to make sure that the Liberal government honours its promise
and funds a National School Food Program

We invite you to help by sending a letter To PM Trudeau and Minister of
Finance Freeland. 

1. WRITE TO PM TRUDEAU AND MINISTER OF FINANCE FREELAND (template letter

2. ADAPT THE LETTER FOR YOUR MP
Send a note to your MP asking them to let Minister Freeland know that they
are looking for school food investment in Budget 2024.

3. SCHOOL FOOD VISITS
Invite your MP and local media to visit your school food program so they
can learn more about school food programs.

Throughout March 2024, thousands across Canada will gather at school, at
home, at work and online with friends and colleagues to highlight the
importance of healthy food at school and call for a National School Food
Program for Canada.

We invite you to host your own crunch or join the Coalition for Healthy
School Food and students from coast to coast to coast for a Virtual Great
Big Crunch on MARCH 7, 2024 AT 1PM EST. Register for the event here [10].

1. JOIN OUR VIRTUAL CANADA-WIDE CRUNCH WITH THE MINISTER OF FAMILIES,

Un NOUVEAU RAPPORT [5] rédigé (DISPONIBLE EN ANGLAIS SEULEMENT POUR
L'INSTANT) par Ruetz Consulting pour le Gouvernement du Canada et financé
par la Fondation de la Famille Arrell, met en évidence le retour sur
investissement multisectoriel qui découle de l'investissement dans les
programmes d’alimentation scolaire, en mettant l'accent sur l'éventail
des avantages associés à la gratuité universelle des repas scolaires.

Quelques faits saillants (détaillés pages 9 et 10) : En Suède, l'accès
des parents à un repas gratuit universel a augmenté la participation des
mères au marché du travail de 5 % et les revenus permanents des ménages
de 2,6 % (Lundborg et al., 2022). En Chine, l'introduction de repas
scolaires a entraîné une augmentation de 9 % à 14 % du nombre d'heures
de travail hebdomadaire des mères, les augmentations les plus
significatives concernant les mères à faible revenu et les mères des
