The government of Sierra Leone has yet to enact a law banning this harmful practice despite recording one of the highest FGM prevalence rates in Africa. According to the 2019 Demographic Health Survey, 83% of women and girls aged between 15 and 49 years have undergone this harmful and risky procedure. Failing to protect women and girls from FGM is a violation of Sierra Leone’s obligations under international law.
Today, together with our partners Forum Against Harmful Practices and Not in My Name, we’ve launched a petition calling for urgent action from the Government of Sierra Leone. We need your support. Please sign and share this public petition that urges the government of Sierra Leone to take action to end FGM and ensure effective justice for the families of the girls who have died as a result of FGM.
