According to the World Health Organization, tobacco products are the most littered item on the planet. They leach harmful chemicals, including residual nicotine, and breakdown into microplastics2 that contaminate waterways, harm wildlife, and further threaten human health.
This is also a public health and equity issue. Flavored tobacco products are designed to attract and hook young people. Tobacco addiction can lead to a lifetime of health complications including heightened risk of cancer and premature death.3 And, the tobacco industry's tactics have historically targeted African-American communities through strategic advertising, flavored products like menthol cigarettes, and lower prices, perpetuating health disparities and disproportionately affecting Black youth.
LD 1215 will end the sale of flavored tobacco in Maine and lead to healthier communities and a healthier environment. Tell your legislators to vote yes on LD 1215. Thank you for taking action! |
