The Log from the Sea of Cortez: John Steinbecks Forgotten Masterpiece on How to Think and the Art of Seeing the Pattern Beyond the Particular The hardest state for a human being to sustain is that of open-endedness. We may know that uncertainty is the crucible of creativity, we may know that uncertainty is the key to democracy and good science, and yet in our longing for certainty we keep propping ourselves up from the elemental wobbliness of life on the crutch of opinion. Few things are more seductive to us than a ready opinion, and we brandish few things more flagrantly as we move through the world, slicing through its fundamental uncertainty with our insecure certitudes. The trouble with opinion is that it instantly islands us in the stream of life, cutting off its subject — and us along with it — from the interconnected totality of deep truth.

WorkWorkWorkWorkThis startup claims its new homes will generate more energy than they use Aro has only built a few homes, but Gish says it will be on track to build 36 homes per year by the end of 2024. The company\'s production facility can handle 100 homes a year. It\'s unclear how much consumers will be willing to pay for a carbon-negative home, given how pricey the housing market is right now, and while mortgage rates remain stubbornly high. WorkWorkGoldman Sachs's CEO says the economic recovery isn't as sturdy as it looks Part of Solomon’s reasoning is that, while “the upper half of the economy here in the United States is still very strong,” things are getting a little dicier down below. That’s how you get companies like billionaire-beloved Hermès touting gangbusters growth while Kellogg’s is pitching cereal for dinner. WorkWorkTrader Joe’s Is Coming to Springfield. Just Not That Springfield. Trader Joe’s has inspired an intense following in the United States for its abundant selection of affordable yet distinctive store-brand products — like their spinach and artichoke dip, Greek chickpeas with cumin and parsley, and horchata ice cream — that stand out from the wares of other American supermarkets, which have largely stuck with staples branded for the mass market. WorkWorkWorkApple cancels plans to build an electric car As part of its silence, Apple\'s hasn\'t outlined its expenditures in the auto space. Overall, the company spent about $30 billion on research and development in 2023, a 14% increase over the prior year. Apple\'s R&D budget includes investments in new software and features for its existing products such as the iPhone. WorkHere are this year's most competitive rental markets While rental supply is rising, demand is sustaining thanks to the short supply of homes for sale in today\'s market and rising mortgage rates. Home prices are still high, even with rising mortgage interest rates, making it increasingly difficult for younger Americans to make the transition from renter to homeowner. WorkWorkBumble cuts ~350 employees as dating apps face a reckoning | TechCrunch The company posted weak Q4 2023 results today showing a $32 million net loss and $273.6 million in revenue. While up from the same period a year ago, earnings came in below Wall Street expectations and were paired with a disappointing Q1 2024 forecast — sending Bumble’s stock tumbling ~10% in after-hours trading. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkRed Army Faction militant arrested in Germany after decades on run Klette is suspected of involvement in a gun attack on the US embassy in Bonn in 1991 and an explosive attack in Weiterstadt in 1993. There is evidence to suggest that she was also at the crime scene during a 1993 anti-terrorism operation in Bad Kleinen, Mecklenburg, in which the police officer Michael Newrzella and the RAF member Wolfgang Grams were killed and the former RAF member Birgit Hogefeld was arrested. WorkQatar and Egypt 'will help form new Palestinian technocratic government' His aides fear that some of the phraseology coming from the US security officials suggest Washington, despite its warnings, is going to greenlight the land offensive in Rafah on the basis that Israel has constructed a credible plan that will shift the refugees within Gaza once again, leaving Hamas exposed to a final Israeli attack. WorkWorkKey Witness Says He Doesn’t Know When Romance Between Trump Prosecutors Began Lawyers for Mr. Trump and other defendants hammered at Mr. Bradley’s credibility on Tuesday, reading aloud text messages he wrote in January that appeared to suggest that he knew more about the prosecutors’ relationship than he was letting on. In text exchanges, Mr. Bradley told a defense lawyer, Ashleigh Merchant, that the romance between the prosecutors had begun before Nov. 1, 2021, when Ms. Willis hired Mr. Wade. WorkIn Chicago, It’s Summer in February Still, for most of Tuesday, Chicago looked and felt like summer: Apartment windows were pushed open to catch the warm breeze. Restaurants set up tables and chairs on sidewalks for al fresco lunch service, a rare sight in a Chicago February. WorkThe Killing at U. of Georgia: What We Know Ms. Riley was an undergraduate student at the school until the spring of 2023. After that, she enrolled in Augusta University’s nursing program, which has a campus in Athens, school officials said. She was on Augusta University’s fall 2023 dean’s list. WorkMichigan Judge Orders Deposed G.O.P. Leader to Stand Down The judge also forbade her from accessing the party’s bank accounts and postal boxes, and from engaging in communication on social media on behalf of the party. In recent days, she had used the party’s social media accounts to promote her “convention” in Detroit on Saturday. WorkWorkYoung Voters Say Their Discontent Goes Deeper Than Israel and Gaza But for some young people in Michigan and elsewhere, Mr. Biden’s alignment with Israel has presented a new concern. Voters under 30 overwhelmingly voiced their opposition to the conflict in a December New York Times/Siena College poll, saying that Israel hadn’t done enough to prevent civilian casualties in Gaza and that the military campaign should stop. WorkWorkWorkWorkAs Spending Talks Intensify, Johnson’s Bind Grows Tighter “He has a divided Republican grass-roots base,” Mr. Weber said. “Isolationism has spread among the grass-roots base, but there’s also a lot of grass-roots Republicans who will be furious if we let the Russians win. He’s got problems multiple ways. But he’s got to figure out the right thing to do and do it. It may cost him his speakership.” WorkBehind the A.I. Robocall That Impersonated Biden: A Democratic Consultant and a Magician But Mr. Carpenter said Mr. Kramer had told him he wanted the audio in order to assess the technology as a potential service for future clients, after a Thanksgiving party where Mr. Carpenter had made an A.I. impersonation of Senator Lindsey Graham “saying something vulgar” as a joke. The two men were introduced through a mutual acquaintance last year, Mr. Carpenter said. WorkRepublican Demands and Divisions Drive Impasse Toward a Shutdown In one case last fall, the more moderate lawmakers helped to sink a spending bill that prevented money from being spent to enforce a District of Columbia law that protects employees from being discriminated against for seeking contraception or abortion services. WorkHow California’s Rainy Season Is Shaping Up So Far Though the winter storms have often been damaging, they’re mostly good news for the water supply. The state’s reservoirs are at a healthy 119 percent of their normal levels, in part because they are still benefiting from the back-to-back “atmospheric rivers” that slammed California last winter. WorkYellen Urges Israel to Restore Economic Ties to West Bank Senior Biden administration officials have been trying to mediate a resolution to the conflict in Gaza, which health authorities there say has killed approximately 29,000 Palestinians. Ms. Yellen has largely been focused on tracking the economic implications of the war and managing the sanctions that the Treasury Department has imposed on Hamas and those who are involved in its network of finances. WorkAn Emboldened F.T.C. Bolsters Biden’s Efforts to Address Inflation White House officials concede that there is little more Mr. Biden can do unilaterally to reduce grocery prices and even less chance of legislative help from Congress. That is why Mr. Biden has resorted to the bully pulpit, calling on stores to reduce prices and chastising snack makers for engaging in “shrinkflation” — reducing portions while raising or maintaining prices. WorkTesla has mysterious humanoid robots. Here's what to know about them Optimus could present even more of a challenge.
