AFL-CIO: Pass This Bill, Then Do Much More
|
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka made the following statement in response to a deal on the coronavirus response bill:
"Make no mistake, working people and our allies took last week’s corporate grab bag and made substantial improvements. We are thankful to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for their intense effort on behalf of working people.
This deal includes a number of things America’s workers must have immediately, including an expansion of the unemployment insurance program; increased funding for schools, hospitals, and state and local governments; relief for the airline industry that includes worker rights protections; and critical funding to keep transit workers on the job."

|
Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers West announced Thursday that it located 39 million N95 masks and will make them available to state and local governments and health care systems that are fighting the novel coronavirus outbreak.
The union found a distributor with the masks, which are cleared for surgical use, after pleas from health care workers as new coronavirus cases surge across the state and the country as a whole.

Do Something! Sign Petition Asking Gov. Abbott to Grant Grocery, Pharmacy
|
Call On Governor Abbott to Include ALL Workers on the Frontline.
With over 1.3 million UFCW grocery store, pharmacy, and food production workers working tirelessly around the clock to make sure America's families have the supplies they need during this unprecedented health crisis, it is imperative that Texas ensures these frontline heroes have the support they need to continue battling America's crisis.
Ask Governor Abbott today to include grocery store workers, pharmacy workers, and food production workers as emergency service providers so that they are eligible for the same benefits as other front line workers, like doctors, firefighters, and police officers, when dealing with this pandemic.

Austin-Travis County EMS medic tests positive for COVID-19
|
The Chief of Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services confirms a paramedic tested positive for COVID-19. This announcement came on the first day its stay-at-home ordinance is in effect...
Selena Xie, President of Austin EMS Association said, "She's doing okay. Still has symptoms, and we're just working through them, but we've been bringing care packages to her. Just making sure she has everything she needs."
Xie said they can't say exactly how the medic got the virus.
"Being in EMS, we presume that any positive COVID test is probably going to be related to a call," Xie explained. "There are a lot of people that are spreading the disease while asymptomatic. It might actually be someone who broke their arm. It might be someone who has chest pain."
According to Xie, medics wear gowns, goggles and masks to protect themselves.
"Our medics are all acting extremely professional, they're extremely brave right now, but privately, we all have the same concerns that everybody else has," Xie said. "Bringing it home to loved ones, bring it home to young kids... So for sure, the stress is a little bit greater. But our job is dangerous in a pandemic and not in a pandemic."
