John,

This month, House Republicans passed an extreme bill that appeases Big Polluters over the people and climate – once again showing where their true loyalties lie.

Under both Democratic and Republican administrations spanning recent decades, we’ve created a climate monster by pretending that natural gas – because it is cleaner than coal when it is burned – is a climate solution. That has led to serious downplaying of the methane losses associated with this industry.

With new studies finally quantifying the life-cycle methane losses from well heads, to pipelines, to liquefaction facilities, to the transporting of liquified natural gas (LNG), the results are alarming: LNG actually has a greater greenhouse gas impact than coal.

Yet the US is rushing to build more natural gas infrastructure so that we can transport and export even more natural gas, especially LNG. That’s what the fossil-fuel-beholden GOP has done this month: they’re pushing rampant LNG expansion at the expense of our communities and the climate.

The facts are indisputable, John: Not only are we already the world’s largest LNG exporter, but we’re also on track to double it. And, the creation of new LNG facilities will actually increase, not decrease, energy prices. That’s not even to mention that our allies in the global fight against climate change want clean energy to be the focus, not LNG.

Rather than taking action on things like government funding, national security, or aiding our allies, GOP leadership is wasting time on fast-tracking dirty energy projects and throwing environmental justice communities under the bus.

As long as the GOP keeps trying to lead our country down a dark path away from a sustainable future, you can rest assured that I will fight back. Now, more than ever, we need a Congress that will advance clean technologies, green infrastructure and jobs, and other strategies that can mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis while making our country stronger, healthier and more secure. If you agree, add your name here.

One of these days, I hope Republicans will disentangle themselves from the fossil fuel industry and join in these critical efforts.

It would be much better if climate action could be bipartisan. But the truth is, John: we don’t have time to wait for Republicans to see the light. The climate crisis is worsening before our eyes, and this isn’t like other political issues where you can accept modest incremental progress over the course of many years – this is about our narrowing window of opportunity to save the planet for both Democrats and Republicans. It’s about hard realities and hard science. We don’t have the luxury of waiting for GOP politics to evolve.

This fight requires constant rededication and an unwavering focus on what’s at stake. I’m grateful to have your support in this movement, John.

– Jared
