As a young Black kid growing up in a majority-white town in Pennsylvania, Black History Month was one of the few times when the accomplishments of my ancestors and community were put front and center. Hearing the stories of the civil rights leaders who made my life today possible took root in me, and inspired me to make some history of my own.
In 2018, my hometown elected me our first Black state representative. Four years later, I became the first Black lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania (and the youngest in the country).
Now, we’re celebrating my daughter’s first Black History Month (yes, that’s her above ☝🏾) and I’m reminded again why we share our stories. It’s not just about honoring those who came before us like Harriet and Rosa — it’s about showing our children they can make history, too.
In that way, February is also about our Black future , which is why I’ve set a goal of raising $5,000 for the DLGA this month to support their efforts to elect more leaders of color to statewide office.
