Catherine Truitt and her primary challenger Michele Morrow were set to appear together last night at a candidate forum in their home county of Wake. In the Superintendent race, the county has the most primary votes up for grabs. In the 2020 primary, 52 thousand votes came from Wake.
Around 250 voters attended the sold-out event to hear from Council of State and NC state house candidates. The Western Wake Republican Club forum was organized in mid-January. Catherine Truitt was the first candidate to confirm her participation, organizers say.
But Catherine Truitt was a no-show.
Michele Morrow called out her opponent’s behavior in her firey address to the crowd”
“We currently have a Superintendent who refuses to show up to the job (interview) that she is being asked to apply for. This is not the only time she has not shown up. I have traveled the state for the last two years and no one has any contact with Catherine. Why? Because she is not proud of the fact that she has put a rubber stamp on every bad idea that has come down from Biden’s U.S Department of Education.”
Being a no-show at a voter event in your hometown speaks volumes. Truitt showed no interest in engaging with constituents or understanding their concerns. Her lack of commitment to her supporters who came to hear her speak to her opponent was also evident.
But Truitt does show up for wealthy and powerful elites.
A week ago, Truitt hosted a hometown event of her own at the Raleigh Country Club.
Thom Tillis headlined her exclusive fundraiser [ [link removed] ] at the Raliegh Country Club. North Carolina's richest man, Jim Goodnight [ [link removed] ], was a featured guest. So were Department of Public Instruction vendors like for-profit Charter One's Gregg Sinders and Metcon Construction [ [link removed] ] President Aaron Thomas.
TRUITT’S STORMY HISTORY
A few weeks ago, the current superintendent attended [ [link removed] ] a Johnston County GOP forum where her opponent was not present.
During the event, Truitt boasted to voters that she helped Republicans in the General Assembly pass conservative legislation.
Following Truitt's presentation, Johnston County School Board member Michelle Antione presented her version of the superintendent's record.
When Antione mentioned Truitt's record of promoting critical race theory, Truitt erupted in anger. Truitt is heard screaming at Antione in a video provided by an attendee, accusing Antione of lying. Truitt continued to shout at Antione until the school chief left the meeting in a dramatic huff.
In an era of widespread social media disinformation, it has never been more important for voters to be well-informed about their choices before heading to the polls. Forums are one of the most effective ways to get to know the candidates in a personal and unscripted format.
Clearly, Catherine Truitt's priorities are not educating voters on her record in the Republican primaries.
NOTE: A Wake Republican Club organizer says she received an email from Truitt after the event stating that she had double-booked herself and was unable to attend.
