Have you heard? The IRS is launching a new service—Direct File—where consumers can file their federal income taxes for free

Direct File is a simple system for simple tax returns that will be filed online.

This tax season, the IRS is kicking off its free filing system in 12 states:
Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Consumers can use Direct File to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit and receive a tax refund, even if they wouldn’t otherwise file a tax return. Visit directfile.irs.gov to see if you’re eligible to use this free program.

Direct File is available in English and Spanish, with live online support from the IRS every weekday.

Direct File should be available to all eligible taxpayers by mid-March. Visit directfile.irs.gov for the latest information.
