I’m writing this from Washington as the House of Representatives looks ready to pass its third Coronavirus relief bill. Typically, I don’t send these types of e-mails. But I’ve never been more frustrated.
Today, we are presented with the classic Hobson's Choice: stand on principle, vote against this legislation and risk the collapse and possible permanent destruction of the American economy, or vote for the bill and support American workers and their families despite tens of millions in unrelated spending that does nothing to solve the national emergency at hand. In short, because of the self-interest of Congressional Democrats who chose to hold the safety and security of the American people hostage in order to advance their partisan pet projects, we are really presented with no real choice at all.
I am disappointed - yet unsurprised - that Democrats would so blatantly use this time of national crisis to take care of their own partisan priorities before the wellbeing of the American people. Their selfish actions over the last week have delayed the delivery of billions of dollars in economic and medical relief, only to extort tens of millions in taxpayer funding for a list of political pay-offs and bailouts including, but not limited to, the Kennedy Center, public radio and another failed attempt to federalize our election system. The American people would be better served had these funds instead been directed to hospitals, health care workers, small business owners and their employees who are confronting this crisis head-on.
I have consistently voted against bloated spending bills amid manufactured budget crises because constituents LIKE YOU have made it clear that Washington should live within its means. We are tired of a government that continues to write checks and incur debt that our children and grandchildren will be expected to pay. Today, however, we are confronted with a true crisis of global proportion and we cannot turn our back on the men and women fighting this virus and its real impact on their lives - that is why I choose to make the only real choice that is presented.
When this virus is defeated, and it will be, our economy will recover and our way of life will be preserved - but we will never forget and we must never let the American people forget how the process was corrupted; how we went from an economic stimulus bill for the people, to political pandering when American workers and their families worry about the roof over their head and food on the table.
We will not forget, and when we recover and the President is re-elected, we will fix it.
