This is urgent? ? ? DEVELOPING? After intense negotiations in the Senate, the coronavirus relief bill passed unanimously in the Senate late Wednesday night.
Despite Trump's efforts, the bill blocks funds from going to Trump-owned properties and adds a Senate-confirmed inspector general and independent review board as oversight to the fund.
We also succeeded in removing $3 billion in direct payouts to the oil industry that Republican leadership initially included in the package.
What happens next is absolutely critical ? and we need your help. The House is expected to pass the bill today, after which Trump will sign it. Every indication is that Trump will still attempt to divert some funds to the oil and gas industries ? we have to fight tooth and nail to stop that from happening.
Please, in the leadup to the vote today, we're looking for every LCV member to pitch in with an emergency contribution. We never expected it would turn out this way ? but this could be the most important environmental fight of the year.
A donor is triple-matching every contribution to LCV right now. Please, take a look at your status below and make an emergency contribution to fund this campaign. Even $5 is enough to make a difference ? [link removed]
We've been organizing in a major way to stop oil bailouts from making it into the final bill. The campaign is working. Originally, when Trump was asked about oversight on the $500 billion fund for businesses, he actually said "I'll be the oversight."
Now, we've stripped direct oil funding from the bill. We have an oversight board. And it's because we've been able to push pro-environment senators to go to the mat for it ? that is the power of organizing.
But our work is not over ? not even close. We need to get even louder. We need to keep organizing (digitally!), we need to make clear to lawmakers that even while they pass this bill they'll need to be as vigilant as ever that oil companies don't get handouts from President Trump and his industry cronies, but we can't do any of this without your help. Here's where things stand with our campaign right now:

[link removed] We are going to keep pushing, because we have to ? but also because this isn't the only fight we're up against right now. Hitting this month's goal is SO important. Here are a few reasons why: Because a federal judge just voided nearly 1 million acres of oil and gas leases, ruling that a Trump administration policy to cut public input out of the leasing process was illegal. There's a massive fight underway to re-secure that land for drilling ? even now, while everyone is distracted by the COVID-19 crisis! ? and we're campaigning to stop it. We need you on board. Donate to LCV today ? [link removed] Because the Trump administration is trying to gut the National Environmental Policy Act. That would mean agencies would no longer consider climate change when approving major projects like highways, pipelines, and other infrastructure proposals, and they could ignore public input. We're making a final urgent push to block the new rule, but we have to move quickly if we have any chance at all. You can help. Make a donation to the League of Conservation Voters today ? [link removed] Because the Trump administration is about to sell access to the area around the Grand Canyon to allow uranium mining. The Grand Canyon has been home to Indigenous communities, including the Havasupai, Hualapai, Hopi, and Navajo Nation communities, for millennia. Congress is pushing to block the sale, but we need major grassroots pressure if we have any chance of succeeding. Please ? make a donation today. Even $5 is enough to make a difference ? [link removed] Because the 2020 race is in full swing, and we need the environmental movement to be pushing ? HARD. Through our Change the Climate 2020 campaign, we're pushing presidential candidates to commit to serious plans to fight climate change, including their ideas to invest in communities that are hit hardest by its effects. The only way that happens is if the environmental movement mobilizes in a major way. We need YOUR help ? [link removed] Because even after Trump pulled the United States from the Paris Agreement, there's still a real shot at holding ourselves to the commitments we made as a country. After aggressive grassroots campaigns, state and local governments are setting their own emissions limits. This is stuff that doesn't always make front page news ? but it's huge, and it only happens when the environmental movement demands it. Friend ? your donation keeps this work going ? [link removed] I know it's a frightening and uncertain time, friend. Thank you, thank you, thank you for continuing to fight anyway. All of us at LCV hope you and your loved ones stay healthy during this difficult time.
