Dear John,

Iris Johnston knew she wanted to volunteer to help voters before the 2020 election. She lives in Florida, and she saw that people were being restricted from voting due to the state’s voter ID law. So, she did a Google search and found that VoteRiders needed folks to help voters get their IDs. She signed up right away.

Now, Iris is a VoteRiders Voter ID Assistance Volunteer. That means she coordinates transportation for people to their local DMV and meets them there to support them through the entire process of getting identification.

“When someone is successful at getting their ID, they get so excited,” she told VoteRiders. “There are a lot of high-fives.”

If you’re interested in getting more involved with VoteRiders, becoming a Voter ID Assistance Volunteer is a great way to help voters one-on-one. Some volunteers help voters track down underlying documents like birth certificates, while others, like Iris, help them at the DMV.

If you can’t make this month’s event, we’ve already got another one on the books for March 26. >> [link removed]

As for Iris, she finds her volunteer work with VoteRiders very rewarding: “Do it. Absolutely. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing — I don’t quite know what I’m doing — do it, step out of your comfort zone, get involved. I was nervous the first time and it helped so much that I got on-the-spot training. A new volunteer is not just going to be set out there to flounder. There is a lot of support.”

Be sure to read more about Iris’ experience as a VoteRiders volunteer. >> [link removed]
