As a keystone species, polar bears hold the Arctic ecosystem together.

They keep the population of other top predators at bay and land animals like Arctic foxes scavenge on their leftovers. If they were to disappear, it would have drastic effects on the Arctic ecosystem and every creature within it.

Polar bears have one major nemesis: climate change.

As the Arctic warms, melting sea ice leaves these bears either waiting on land, unable to hunt for their next meal, or risk drowning as they swim for days to find food.

The best way to slow the melting of Arctic summer sea ice and help protect the polar bear habitat from climate change is by tackling methane.

That’s because methane is responsible for at least 25% of today’s global warming and has 80 times more warming power, pound-for-pound, than carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere.

EDF has been researching methane for over a decade. And with the help of members like you, we can plan for long-term efforts and launch trailblazing solutions like MethaneSAT, a bold mission to precisely track methane pollution from space and hold methane emitters accountable.

This work will help preserve Arctic summer sea ice and ensure polar bears can not only survive but thrive for generations to come.
