Dear SPUC supporter,
The pro-abortion lobby are really pushing their deadly decriminalisation amendment. And they seem to have recruited journalists to do their campaigning for them. This article in the Times might as well have been written by BPAS – it parrots all their talking points with no consideration of the pro-life side.
This cannot go unchallenged. All the talk of ancient laws and vulnerable women seeks to disguise what this amendment really is - DIY abortion up to birth. The explanatory note to Diana Johnson's amendment explicitly says that it will 'disapply existing criminal law related to the accessing or procurement of abortion care from women acting in relation to their own pregnancy at any gestation'. This means that a woman who induced her own abortion at home using pills (or any other method) at any stage of pregnancy, including just before natural birth, would not commit a crime.
MPs who support this are showing just how out of touch with public opinion they are. Polling shows that only 1% of the general public support abortion up to birth, and most people were horrified at the death of baby Lily, who was around 34 weeks gestation when her mother Carla Foster illegally obtained abortion pills. Encouraging late term self-induced abortions is dangerous for women, and shows a sickening disregard for the right to life of innocent babies. MPs and campaigners advocating this highly irresponsible amendment should be ashamed.
Amid the pro-abortion propaganda, there are some worrying details in the article – BPAS polling claims that 55% of MPs back decriminalisation.
I know many of you have done so already, but if not, please write to your MP asking them to oppose and vote against Diana Johnson’s decriminalisation amendment (New Clause 1). You can find all the details and briefings here.
