Earlier this month, Representatives Matt Gaetz and Elise Stefanik filed a resolution in Congress stating that former President Trump “did not engage in insurrection” on January 6th, 2021. We know this is patently false.

On January 6th, former President Trump violated his oath of office and incited a violent insurrection that attacked the U.S. Capitol, threatened the assassination of the Vice President and congressional leaders, and disrupted the peaceful transfer of power for the first time in our nation’s history. His role in the insurrection has been proven again and again on both the state and federal levels. The language of Trump’s second impeachment, “incitement of insurrection,” was adopted by the House of Representatives. Trump’s supporters in Congress cannot rewrite this history.

Since the 2020 election, Republican lawmakers and MAGA extremists have repeatedly advocated for Trump’s claim that the election was rigged against him. This lie was what brought his supporters to Washington on January 6th, and it is what inspired them to violently attack the Capitol and disrupt the legal certification of Trump’s defeat.
