By: Jim Daly

According to recent media reports out of New York City, the nation’s current epicenter for the coronavirus pandemic, police and firefighters there are being infected at alarmingly high rates.

As of Tuesday, 129 officers of the New York Police Department and 46 firefighters from the New York Fire Department have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Pro-Life Groups: Abortion Industry Using Needed Medical Supplies to Kill Babies Instead of Coronavirus
By: Bruce Hausknecht

A group of over 50 pro-life organizations and individuals signed a joint letter to Alex Azar, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), urging him to use whatever emergency powers he has at his disposal to require abortion clinics to stop performing elective abortions and join in the collective national effort to combat the coronavirus.

Officials with Susan B. Anthony List, Students for Life of America, March for Life, National Right to Life, Concerned Women for America and the Family Policy Alliance, among many other of the letter’s signatories, explained the issue this way:

“While surgery centers postpone elective and diagnostic procedures, abortion centers are churning out surgical and chemical abortions and putting women, especially the poor, at risk,” the letter states. “Their continued operation depletes sorely needed personal protective equipment and leads to complications that will further overwhelm already overextended emergency rooms.”

Health Professionals in Coronavirus-Torn Italy Gets Boost from American Medical Team
By: Brittany Raymer

While the coronavirus outbreak may have started in China, it was its explosive growth in Italy that took the world by surprise. Currently, Worldometer reports that there have been nearly 70,000 cases and 6,820 deaths there. Despite the unique nature of this global crisis, Samaritan’s Purse received permission to send a medical response team to one of the hardest hit areas.

The Daily Citizen recently had the opportunity to catch up with Ken Isaacs, the Vice President of Programs and Government Relations and my former boss at Samaritan’s Purse. He’s been on the front lines leading efforts to respond to numerous disasters, including the Rwandan genocide, the 2004 South Asian tsunami, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan and numerous other disasters, including this latest response in Italy.

Drafting Our Daughters? U.S. Commission Recommends Women Be Forcefully Conscripted

By: Zachary Mettler

An 11-member commission set up by the U.S. Congress will recommend that women should be eligible for the draft, which gives more ammunition to lawmakers seeking to extend the draft to women. Congress would have to vote to change the law to require women to register.

The commission began the study as a result of the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act which authorized the research. It has spent two years delving into the idea of forcing women to register for the draft, along with looking at other items like encouraging more young people to voluntarily join the military.

Coronavirus Delays Split Between Biblical and Revisionist Groups Within United Methodist Church
By: Jeff Johnston

The United Methodist Church (UMC), the third largest denomination in the U.S., postponed its scheduled May conference in Minneapolis, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Almost 900 delegates were expected to come from all over the world to discuss, debate and vote on a plan for splitting the denomination: the “Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation.”

The separation is between two groups within the UMC who differ over biblical sexual ethics – with LGBT issues at the forefront of the divide.
