As Kansas agricultural producers work tirelessly to feed, fuel, and clothe the world, they reap a deep sense of satisfaction from a job well done, but it comes at a high price. The calling of agriculture means standing strong in the face of uncertainty, unpredictable weather, bad market conditions, sleepless nights, and early mornings. People who sacrifice so much to care for the land are also the natural caretakers of their local communities. Servant leaders like John and Ginny Buttenhoff, this month’s Ag Heroes, make rural America the backbone of our country. They step into the gap and serve, put others first, and embody the values that make America unique, like faith, family, and freedom.
John, Ginny, and their four children farm with John's parents in Lincoln, Kansas, where they grow wheat, milo, and soybeans, and raise Red Angus commercial cattle. Like many Kansas farmers, John began farming when he was old enough to drive a tractor. After graduating college and marrying in 2009, John and Ginny returned to Lincoln to buy their own land and farm alongside their family.
