This week in Washington lawmakers were home in district for August recess.

Our hearts go out to the victims, families, and communities impacted by the recent mass shootings in Gilory, El Paso, and Dayton. Catholic Charities spoke out against the senseless violence and called on "our elected officials to take immediate action to address the scourge of gun violence and xenophobia. We pray for the victims and their families, for the first responders and for healing in our suffering communities."

Faith and the Common Good Coquese Williams correctly indicated that in 1970, finally facing the reality of year-long sessions, Congress mandated a summer break as part of the Legislative Reorganization Act. Today, the August recess continues to be a regular feature of the Congressional calendar and provides a chance for law-makers to spend time with family and meet with constituents in their home states.

August recess is a wonderful time to connect with your Members of Congress in both the House and the Senate.  Many of them host town hall meetings, or you can call their district office and set up a meeting.  You can check their webpages to see if they have any meetings scheduled during August.  Click here to find a Member of the House of Representatives page or here to find a Member of the Senate page.

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein).  She was a Jewish convert to the Catholic faith. As an adult, she encountered Christians which drew her to Catholicism. She eventually joined a Carmelite convent. In 1942, she was still arrested by the Nazis and killed at Auschwitz.  Here is a prayer that she wrote.

O my God, fill my soul with holy joy, courage and strength to serve you.

Enkindle your love in me and then walk with me along the next stretch

of road before me. I do not see very far ahead, but when I have arrived

where the horizon now closes down, a new prospect will open before me

and I shall meet with peace.

 - St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
