John,
Republican politicians are in disarray―but that’s when they’re most dangerous.
As the chaotic Republican-controlled House of Representatives scurries around to avert a government shutdown next week, Social Security is in their crosshairs.
Speaker Mike Johnson is desperate for something to attach to a government funding bill that would allow his extremist caucus to feel like they won something. They tried getting President Biden to sign off on an extreme immigration plan, but that fell apart. Now Republicans are floating half a dozen “compromise” ideas, from assaults on reproductive rights to a closed-door fiscal commission designed to slash Social Security where voters can’t see them.
We’re on Capitol Hill every day making sure Social Security stays safe. Can you chip in $7 to fuel our sprint before the government funding deadline, and defend Social Security from right-wing attacks?

Social Security Works
-- MICHAEL'S EMAIL --
John,
Next Thursday, everyone who makes $1 million this year will see their paycheck grow by 6.2%. And the very next day, the government will partially shut down as House Speaker Mike Johnson attempts to jam through his closed-door commission to cut Social Security and Medicare.
Here’s the thing: If the ultra-wealthy paid into Social Security on all their income, instead of just the first $168,600, we could afford to EXPAND Social Security benefits. Not cut them.
This is the truth that Republicans like Mike Johnson want to hide behind closed doors.
Social Security Works has led the fight for years to scrap the cap and fully fund our Social Security system. Can you pitch in $7 today to protect Social Security from Republicans?
Wall Street’s enemies of Social Security are scared. Right-wing think-tank the Cato Institute, which launched its “Leninist Strategy” to destroy Social Security1 back in the 1980s, just published an attempt to rebut our arguments that they plan to cut Social Security and Medicare.
The author dances around the subject, but never denies that the purpose of such a commission is to jam through cuts to Social Security and Medicare over the overwhelming objections of the American people.
This is the endgame of Wall Street’s 40-year plot to undermine our Social Security system and force us into private alternatives that can charge massive fees on Social Security’s $2.9 trillion trust fund. We don’t have to fall for their trap. Instead of letting Wall Street reach into our pockets and take our money, we can make the rich pay into Social Security on all their income―just like they already do for Medicare!
Social Security Works is meeting every day with members of Congress to make sure every one of them knows: A vote for a fiscal commission is a vote to destroy Social Security and Medicare!
Donate today to fight back against Republican and Wall Street attacks on Social Security and demand Congress scrap the cap so that millionaires and billionaires pay into Social Security all year long, just like working people do.
Thank you,
Michael Phelan
