I’m sure by now you’ve seen the ruling that came out of the Alabama Supreme Court that embryos are now considered children under state law. After three Alabama couples undergoing IVF lost their frozen embryos in an accident at the storage facility, the Court said that these couples can sue the clinic and hospital for wrongful death of a minor child.

Since then, many IVF clinics in Alabama have stopped their IVF services and patients who have long wanted to become parents are left in the dark about their family’s future. Experts warned that conservatives would attack fertility services in the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022, and that is exactly what is happening in Alabama right now.

This IVF ruling is heartbreaking for families in Alabama, and we can expect the fallout from it to have nationwide effects. The far right has been chipping away at reproductive rights for decades, and now they’re taking away people’s ability to have children.

This is yet another example of how a Supreme Court captured by extremist conservatives has paved the way for the erosion of our fundamental rights and freedoms. It’s up to all of us to keep fighting for a Supreme Court that represents the will of the people and not just conservative billionaires.
