Yesterday marked the two year anniversary of the Ukraine war, and two years of terrible loss. The war had displaced 650,000 Ukrainians, and sent thousands of young men to die on the frontlines. Currently, Ukraine is considering a bill to lower draft age by two years, down to 25. The situation is getting desperate as the Ukrainians run low on munitions and Russia continues to power its war economy. 

There must be a longterm strategy, but we can’t give up fighting for Ukraine. Russia has massacred tens of thousands of civilians in Bucha, in Mariupol, and all across Ukraine. We cannot allow such savagery to descend upon the Ukrainian people, and we must stand up to Putin’s despotism. This weekend also saw the return of Navalny’s body to his mother — the leader of the Russian resistance movement can now finally be laid to rest. 

Recent polls out of South Africa suggest that the African National Congress (ANC) may lose power this election. The ANC, the party of Nelson Mandela, has been a progressive force in South African politics for 3 decades now. However, rising unemployment — 1/3 of South Africans are unemployed — economic trouble and corruption has led to dissatisfaction with ANC leadership. The ANC’s main challenger is the right-wing Democratic Alliance (DA), which won 20% of the vote in the last (2019) election, compared to the ANC’s 57%. 

Robots deployed into the deep ocean off the coast of Chile have discovered an incredible array of new life around the hydrothermal vents in the deep ocean. At least 100 new species have been found, with some of unidentified origin and others more recognisably in the family of corals, urchins, crustaceans, sea lilies and so on. 

This discovery will hopefully aid conservation efforts across the Pacific as scientists uncover new life and work to study the new species. The robot descended over 14,000 feet — to the seamounts on the ocean floor of the Pacific. The expedition uncovered new seamounts (underwater mountains) as well as creatures, meaning that even more species might be found in these previously uncharted depths.
