John --
It’s no secret that whenever a crisis hits Americans -- it hits our community even harder.
That’s why it comes as no surprise that the coronavirus is especially threatening for Black Americans. Structural and systemic racism have long-upheld disparities within our healthcare systems -- resulting in higher rates of chronic diseases and lower access to healthcare among Black people.
These are the same barriers that, experts warn, will make the COVID-19 outbreak even more devastating.
It is often an uphill battle just to get medical professionals to take our symptoms, illnesses, and diseases seriously -- and if healthcare providers ignore us in the middle of this pandemic, we are the ones who will feel the consequences of their actions.
We cannot tear down centuries-old discrimination overnight. We cannot deconstruct structural barriers in the blink of an eye.
But, we can stay informed and look out for one another.
So, John, check out this U.S. News and World Report article on the health disparities among Black Americans and how coronavirus may exasperate them. And please share it with your friends and family.
Now, more than ever, we need to take care of ourselves and our neighbors -- and advocate for our communities.
In love and solidarity,
Kailee Scales
