John,

Did you tune into NBC Nightly News last night? Anchor Lester Holt reported on the nation’s top suppliers of crime guns — data uncovered by Brady.
.
In our groundbreaking new report, “The Suppliers of America’s Gun Violence Epidemic,” we provide the American public with the clearest look in two decades as to which gun dealers sell the most crime guns (guns recovered from crimes) and contribute to gun violence in communities nationwide.

At Brady, we believe we must address the source of America’s gun violence epidemic in order to prevent it. But laws passed at the behest of the gun lobby, including the Tiahrt Amendment, make it nearly impossible to understand how, and from where, guns are funneled into the criminal market. In turn, communities are flooded with firearms and bear the burden of gun violence, while gun dealers remain hidden and protected from accountability.

That’s why Brady tirelessly fought to obtain data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
Now, our report, which examines over 1,500 of the top gun dealers linked to crime guns, will help ensure the American public is no longer kept in the dark about businesses that contribute to gun violence in their communities. It also gives lawmakers and researchers information needed to better understand and address policies and practices that contribute to gun violence..

Will you join us in learning more about the suppliers of America’s gun violence epidemic today?

Recognizing Black History Month

[link removed]? [[link removed]?]

For the last week of Black History Month, we’re proud to feature Brenda Haymon, Brady’s director of human resources and gun violence survivor.

On Easter Sunday in 2017, Brenda’s father, Robert Godwin Sr., went out to collect cans in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland, OH. Shortly after beginning his routine walk home, Robert was confronted, shot, and murdered by a stranger. Compounding the senseless horror, the shooter live-streamed the murder on Facebook.

Years later, Brenda joined Brady and has used her voice to help prevent what devastated her family, raising awareness about gun violence in America. Last June, she and her family joined Brady and a group of gun violence survivors at the Boston Red Sox game for Gun Violence Awareness Month [[link removed]] , sharing her lived experience and honoring her father’s life with action in front of thousands.

We are forever grateful for Brenda’s leadership at Brady and for using her voice to guide us to a safer America. Please join us in listening to our podcast episode, “On Survivors Surviving,” to hear more about her father’s legacy and how everyone can be a better supporter of those experiencing grief. LAST CALL: Urge Youth to Apply for the Team ENOUGH Youth Advocacy Training Program!

[link removed] [[link removed]]

Applications for Team ENOUGH’s Washington, D.C., and Michigan Youth Advocacy Training Program close on Monday, February 26, at 11:59 p.m. ET. We’re looking for youth activists (ages 13-26) who are interested in meeting with lawmakers to push for critical gun reform measures.

Have you encouraged a young person (13-26) to apply yet? This is their chance to get off the sidelines and take action against gun violence in their community.

As a member of the Youth Advocacy Training Program, members participate in valuable, hands-on training with policy and grassroots experts over a period of six weeks. Then, members take those skills to the halls of power, urging lawmakers to pass gun violence prevention legislation, and pushing back against dangerous policies.

If this sounds like a good fit for a young person you know, please encourage them to apply BEFORE the deadline on Monday, February 26. [[link removed]]

Donor Spotlight: Beth Soltero

[link removed] [[link removed]]

We at Brady are proud to recognize supporters who fuel our life-saving mission to free America from gun violence. This week, that generous supporter is Beth Soltero and her husband, Gene, who have contributed to Brady for 20 years.

The Solteros became involved with Brady in the wake of personal tragedy, after their 22-year-old daughter, Wendy, was murdered on October 28, 2000. During the trial, the district attorney told Wendy’s family that her murder was “everything everyone wants to believe doesn’t happen.” A defining moment for the family was when two helpful Los Angeles detectives spoke of the need to “get guns off of the streets.”

Beth and her family are driven by the thought that if Wendy had to go through what she did, they need to help the gun violence prevention movement however they can. Her hope for the movement comes from non-survivors getting involved simply because it is the right thing to do. Beth has found that her greatest impact can be made through speaking out, having made multiple trips to Washington, D.C., to advocate for gun violence prevention.

Beth is kept busy by her two-and-a-half-year-old triplet grandchildren [[link removed]] . In her free time, she enjoys golfing, reading, swimming, and traveling.

We thank Beth and Gene for their long-time support of Brady and our life-saving mission. Please join us in learning how you can support Brady today. [[link removed]]

Episode 244 — The Iron River: Gun Trafficking, Mexico, and Violence

From the El Chapo trial to the human toll of cartel violence, we are joined by award-winning journalist Ioan Grillo, author of the book "Blood Gun Money: How America Arms Gangs and Cartels" to discuss the trafficking of firearms from the U.S. to Mexico and beyond. Grillo shares how private sales and straw purchasing of firearms is leading to hundreds of thousands of guns crossing the southern border, playing a role in the illegal drug trade, violence, and migration.
