At the
heart of nuclear risk lies the flawed, unproven and dangerous theory
of nuclear deterrence. Contrary to what its proponents would like you
to believe, deterrence is a cause of global instability and
insecurity, not its antidote. Russia’s brutal and devastating invasion
of Ukraine and the nuclear threats that followed demonstrate
deterrence's flaws. When you focus on what nuclear deterrence really
means - the constant threat to use an indiscriminate weapon of mass
destruction - it is ultimately indefensible.
But
things are not all dark and hopeless. In the face of this escalating
risk, the majority of the world's states continue to speak out against
nuclear threats and nuclear deterrence and rally behind the UN Treaty
on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. After all, the only way to end
the risk of nuclear weapons use is to eliminate nuclear weapons
altogether.
We hope
you will continue to stand with us as we work towards that
goal.
