We’ve all seen shocking headlines like these, John:
We have a term for these tragedies — “family fire”, or a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun in the home that results in death or injury. While media outlets often refer to them as “accidents,” the truth is they are entirely preventable tragedies – and they’re more common than people realize.
Across the country, 4.6 million children live in homes with access to an unlocked or unsupervised gun. And 75% of those children know where that gun is stored. Every day, eight children and teens are unintentionally injured or killed due to family fire.
These statistics are shocking, John. And during the current global health pandemic – with children home from school, child care arrangements disrupted, and parents working to manage households turned upside down – the risk of family fire is greater than ever. But with proper gun storage laws, these preventable tragedies can be avoided altogether.
That’s why we’re asking our supporters to sign our petition demanding that Congress pass the bipartisan bill H.R. 4926 – The Prevent Family Fire Act of 2019 – but we’re missing your response, John. Will you add your name to demand Congress end family fire?
More than ever, it’s important we work to end family fire and ensure children don’t have access to firearms in the home. We’re just 1,358 signatures short of our 10,000-signature goal, and we’re counting on you to respond by midnight tonight: Will you sign the petition and demand Congress end family fire once and for all?
Thanks for taking action,
Team Brady
