Want to see the height of hypocrisy on the IVF issue? Every GOP Senate candidate in the country is running away from the Alabama Supreme Court decision to ban the destruction of frozen embryos. As three clinics have already stopped IVF services in that state, GOP candidates across the country are starting to put out statements to say that the decision was wrong, and that they love growing families.

Former Congressman Mike Rogers put out a similar statement — but he seems to have forgotten his own record on this very issue. In his 14 years in Congress, he co-sponsored four bills that would have had the same effect as the Alabama IVF ruling, making it impossible for millions of couples to have a family:

In 2013, Rogers pushed Rep. Jim Jordan’s HR 1091, the Life at Conception Act.

In 2009, Rogers and Jordan wrote HR 881, the Right to Life Act.

In 2008, Rogers and Jordan authored HR 618, the Right to Life Act.

In 2005, Rogers supported HR 552, the Right to Life Act.

All of these bills agree with the Alabama Supreme Court that a fertilized embryo cannot be disposed of.

Republicans in competitive Senate races are already rushing to say they’re supportive of IVF because they know that, like their stances on abortion, this type of stance could cost them a Senate seat. But we need to believe them when they show us over and over that this is who they are: It was never just about Roe. And they will continue chipping away at individual freedom as long as they have the power to do so.

These are deeply personal decisions for a family. Mike Rogers doesn’t belong anywhere near those decisions.

Elissa believes IVF is a vital option for families who are desperate to grow their families and bring a baby into this world. And, unlike so many others, she remembers and understands the votes she casts on these issues.
